Summary of GCD on OBZH "Dangerous household items and electrical appliances" for children of the middle group. Dangerous household items that are in all homes What household items are the most dangerous

We often associate home with security. It is there that we escape from danger and seek refuge from evil. However, in reality, our own home can be a very dangerous place.

Every year countless people are injured, and some even die, from the items most people use on a daily basis. Despite taking steps to ensure the safety of the home for the child and regular cleaning, in the places we all call home, many mysterious accidents await us.

While most of us only glance at the warning labels and ignore the safety advice on the products we know, spending an extra minute analyzing and managing risks could save your life. You probably own most of these fatal merchandise, and you've probably used them today. But did you know they could kill you? We all blow out the candles when we leave home, and we never leave the stove on. But these things seem to be much less dangerous. Below is a list of common household items that, oddly enough, can be deadly.

White

Whitening products, which are designed to tackle the most serious contamination, can be very dangerous. Swallowing or even inhaling the whiteness can be fatal. However, mixing them with cleaning agents such as ammonia or acids can also have dire consequences.

The main ingredient in whiteness is sodium hypochlorite. When mixed with ammonia, this substance gives off toxic gases called chloramines. When mixed with acids, whiteness releases chlorine gas, which can be harmful to mucous membranes even in minimal quantities. It can even be absorbed through the skin!

Although the dangerous consequences of mixing whiteness with other substances may be unexpected, people know the effects of whiteness itself. In fact, in early 2017, a Chicago woman was charged with first-degree murder after she forced her boyfriend to swallow whiteness. An autopsy confirmed that the death was a direct result of "complications associated with the forced ingestion of a corrosive substance" and, therefore, was ruled a murder.

Toothpaste

You've probably never paid attention to the poison warning that the FDA says is placed on every tube of toothpaste. This is mainly due to the fact that as much as 95% of toothpastes in the United States contain fluoride. Although the severity of the effects depends on the amount absorbed, the FDA strongly recommends contacting a Poison Control Center even if only a small amount of toothpaste is swallowed. The Fluoride Action Network explains that the dental community "has failed to educate the public about the dangers of swallowing too much fluoride-containing toothpaste."

It is shocking that, in the case of most toothpastes, only a pea-sized piece of the paste is recommended. However, advertisements show much larger amounts of toothpaste, which can be dangerous. This can be especially dangerous for children who cannot accurately measure the correct amount of toothpaste or even squeeze out too much toothpaste due to its flavoring.

The FDA initially required the above warning to be placed on the toothpaste tubes because children swallowing too much fluoride toothpaste can lead to severe fluoride poisoning and even death. Another serious side effect of excessive use of toothpaste is the development of fluorosis, which leads to the destruction of tooth enamel and can cause serious reactions. Paradoxically, toothpaste that is designed to maintain the health of our teeth can ultimately be dangerous.

Fireplace

Fireplaces, the very cozy elements that adorn the walls of houses around the world, not only provide warmth and comfort, but can also emit toxic gases. Carbon monoxide is the problem here. You are most at risk if your fireplace has poor ventilation or if you sleep with a fireplace on. Of course, carbon monoxide poisoning can also be the result of a poorly functioning firebox.

Carbon monoxide cannot be seen, smelled, or sensed, so carbon monoxide poisoning occurs in many homes every year and is often fatal. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. Long-term exposure to carbon monoxide can lead to brain damage and death due to the loss of essential oxygen by the body.

To ensure safety and continued use of the fireplace, which creates a homely atmosphere in the building, it is highly recommended to install carbon monoxide detectors in all large areas of your home, especially sleeping areas. In multi-storey buildings, for maximum safety, one detector should be installed on each floor.

Moth balls

Moth balls that contain naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene (very dangerous chemicals) pose a serious safety hazard in the home, especially for young children.

The Ministry of Health explains that both chemicals are converted to gases by oxygen. This is also accompanied by a characteristic scent. These gases not only irritate the eyes and lungs, but are believed to be the cause of cancer.

Young children are less able to remove these byproducts from their blood. As a result, of the approximately 4,000 children who are exposed to the substances in the mothballs each year, 600 need urgent medical attention. Yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes is a major symptom that can lead to organ failure and even death.

Because the poisonous substances in moth balls can be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or even absorbed through the skin, it is recommended to use other means to repel moths. Notably, it is recommended that moth balls be discontinued to prevent other animals from being in places such as attics and gardens.

Pile in dryers

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, clothes dryers are responsible for more than 15,000 fires each year. Debris such as lint can collect in the ventilation ducts and reduce airflow. This interferes with the evacuation of gases from the dryer and can lead to a fire.

According to Angie Hicks, founder of Angie’s List, clothes dryers are appliances we often take for granted. But we need to maintain them and, most importantly, clean their ventilation ducts.

Have your clothes been damp after one complete drying cycle? According to Glen Mayfield, Dryer Maintenance Specialist, this is the first sign that your dryer ventilation duct could be a fire hazard.

Interestingly, in newer homes, washers and dryers are usually placed closer to the center of the home, which naturally implies much longer ventilation ducts. This makes it difficult to remove the lint and makes these houses more fire hazardous.

Lead paint

In 1978, the US government banned the use of all lead paints. Previously built buildings pose a threat that their occupants may suffer from lead poisoning.

Lead paint is still present in millions of America's homes, and the risks are not well known. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, lead paint poses the greatest risk when it peels off.

Lead paint can also be hazardous if it is present on surfaces that children use or chew, such as windows, doors and stairs. Although lead occurs naturally, prolonged exposure can be fatal. It is highly recommended to remove all lead paint as soon as possible.

Extension cords

While extension cords are very useful, they are much more dangerous than most people think (apart from the obvious risk of tripping). The extension cords used at home and at work to bring electricity to the right place are also highly flammable.

Believe it or not, extension cords cause about 3,300 fires every year, killing about 50 people and injuring about 270 more. Half of these injuries are fractures, sprains, and cuts. The Electrical Safety Foundation recommends using extension cords only temporarily and in any case not allowing them to overheat.

Polishes

Furniture varnishes can give your furniture a whole new look and present your home in a new light. But they can also lead to a visit to the intensive care unit. While furniture varnishes can be found under the kitchen sink in almost any home, they are highly toxic.

According to MedlinePlus, a website for information from the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, the hydrocarbons in liquid polishes can be poisonous if swallowed and even inhaled.

This composition poses many risks to several parts of the body. If it gets in your eyes, it can cause loss of vision. If inhaled, it can cause serious lung damage. If it gets on the skin, it can cause serious irritation. Polishes are simply not worth having at home to add shine to your wood furniture, especially if there are children in it.

Non-stick cookware

Non-stick pans are an essential tool for any chef, from restaurant chef to ordinary housewife. In 2006, 90% of all aluminum kitchen utensils were "non-stick" and were often coated with a substance called Teflon.

This percentage continued to rise, but the skepticism of experts reporting the release of hazardous chemicals continued to rise. Robert Wolk, Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, notes that nonstick pans are safe as long as they don't overheat. When cookware is heated to a certain temperature, the coating begins to peel off at the molecular level, releasing poisonous gases. This is especially troubling considering how often we all forget something on the stove!

As new research confirms this problem, there is a growing need for constant monitoring of kitchen utensils. Otherwise, non-stick pans and pans can pose fatal risks to users.

Pressure washers

Prized for their efficiency, pressure washers are quickly replacing traditional garden hoses. These devices use gas or electric motors, which naturally increases the pressure of the middle hose 30-80 times.

According to Consumer Reports, a standard garden hose delivers water at a pressure of about 3.4 kilograms per square centimeter, while pressure washers can deliver 80 times the pressure, from 105 to 280 kilograms per square centimeter.

However, if the water jet is directed in the wrong direction, it can cause instant skin damage. According to one doctor, the extreme danger of pressure washers is that seemingly, even with a minimal rupture of the skin, liquid can enter the tissue and cause bacterial contamination. It can be fatal. Also, prolonged exposure to a jet of water on the human body can cause damage to internal organs and even death. It is estimated that in 2014, over 6,000 people were admitted to intensive care due to injuries associated with pressure washers.

We recommend using devices with a wider angle when cleaning near your home. In this case, cleaning will take more time, but they will give the same result with much less risk. The next time you use a pressure washer to clean your yard, think about getting into the operating room.

Household chemicals can greatly shorten your life!

Chemicals have made human life much easier. It has long been no longer a problem to remove dirty stains from clothes, to rid the apartment of mosquitoes, or to make the house smell like a rose garden. But how often do we think about the dangers hidden in these convenient household tools? Each of them pollutes our apartments with hazardous substances, which is why the air in the brightest, most beautiful rooms can become several times dirtier than on a gas-polluted highway.

After analyzing the data of the latest medical research, Express Gazeta offers the ten most common substances that poison our homes with toxins.

1. Remedies for moths

One of the most dangerous things in an apartment is a moth-repellent chemical. Good old folk remedies such as lavender, geranium leaves, orange peels, or strawberry soap can theoretically only scare off an adult butterfly. However, they are useless in the fight against larvae! Butterflies do not pose a danger to thick sweaters or fur collars. It is the larvae that gnaw them.

Naphthalene recently banned for use in everyday life. However, in Russia from time to time it appears on sale and is sold out with a bang: it is a very effective remedy. Moreover, in small quantities, it works poorly: only a high concentration of a substance, which is very harmful to humans, acts on the mole. It is quite possible to get poisoned with mothballs if you breathe in its vapors (for example, just sorting it out in the closet). Symptoms range from nausea and vomiting to headaches, seizures, and diarrhea.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has issued a special bulletin that highlights: Naphthalene is a carcinogen! It causes cancer in humans and animals. Long-term exposure to this substance can damage or destroy red blood cells (erythrocytes).

Other repellents containing as an active substance paradichlorobenzene, also pose a serious danger to humans. British scientists have found that this substance causes allergic reactions, strongly irritates the mucous membranes and can provoke an asthma attack.

2. Particleboard

Another very common household pollutant is formaldehyde. The highest concentration of vapors of this rubbish will be determined in apartments where furniture from chipboard (chipboard) has recently been brought. Another source of formaldehyde pollution is gas stoves. In case of incomplete combustion of methane, the air is “enriched” with a toxic compound that negatively affects DNA and reproductive organs, eyes and skin.

The substance is recognized as carcinogenic: prolonged inhalation of formaldehyde vapors is fraught with the development of cancer of the nose and throat.

By the way, if you have old chipboard furniture in your apartment, do not rush to throw it away: over time, the release of formaldehyde from it practically disappears. That is, it will no longer bring you more harm.

3. Synthetic carpets

Many synthetic carpets and carpets are toxic and highly electrified. Check out a store that sells these items: you'll be overwhelmed by the pungent smell! The first impression is that you are in the department of paints and varnishes. Poisonous fumes of toxic substances literally hang in the air, which are released from the adhesive base.

If you bought a new rug that smells harsh, take your time to install it in your bedroom. This is fraught with insomnia, irritability and allergic reactions. Put your purchase for two or three weeks in an expanded form where you rarely visit: in a non-residential room or in the country.

4. Laser printers

Australian scientists have found that a laser printer can do as much harm to your health as secondhand smoke! The fact is that a working printer throws tiny particles of printing powder into the air, which can enter the lungs. The consequences are shortness of breath and chronic illness.

Try to locate this device in a well-ventilated area and do not keep it turned on unnecessarily.

5. Plastic bottles

In the production of plastic bottles (including for children) is used biphenol A.

Scientists have long been suspicious of him - since it turned out that biphenol A is similar in structure to the female sex hormone estrogen! A few years ago, experts from the US National Toxicology Program reported that in experimental animals it accelerates puberty, disrupts behavior, and also contributes to the development of prostate and breast cancer.

Never heat plastic bottles! They cannot be washed with hot water. And it is very undesirable to heat food in plastic containers in the microwave: when heated, the release of biphenol A increases 55 times.

6. Anti-flames

Used in mattresses, furniture upholstery, television and computer parts, these substances have saved many lives by preventing home fires. Anti-flame retardants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), were first accepted with a bang. However, it quickly became clear that they are causing enormous harm to health.

Initially, they were impregnated with polyurethane foam mattresses, which are highly flammable, for example, due to an unextinguished cigarette. However, several years later, hundreds of thousands of cases were recorded all over the world: those who slept on such mattresses experienced destruction of internal organs, and problems with the central nervous system.

These toxic substances enter the human body with house dust. They cause thyroid disease, impair sperm quality, and accumulate in breast milk in nursing mothers. Many researchers insist that the use of PBDEs in residential environments should be prohibited.

7. Phthalates

Phthalates widely used as plasticizers in toys, baby teething rings, baby feeding bottles - wherever soft plastic is needed. They are found in men's and women's cosmetics - from cheap to very expensive, as well as in all kinds of sex toys. Phthalic acid esters and salts have had a bad reputation before because they mimic the structure of estrogen.

American and Canadian scientists argue that phthalates adversely affect the early development of boys, and in adults weaken the action of testosterone, the main male hormone, and cause infertility. In Canada, there has even been a massive campaign to oblige manufacturers to indicate phthalate content on packaging.

8. Pesticides

Pesticides - chemicals that are used to combat harmful organisms. These toxic substances are used by almost every Russian family - which of us has never poisoned cockroaches, mosquitoes or mice!

Scientists at Harvard University School of Medicine found that people who were exposed to pesticides, even in small doses, were 70 percent more likely to suffer from Parkinson's disease than those who had little contact with these substances.

9. Lead paints

In many apartments, walls and doors are painted with lead paints. If the paint does not crack or peel off, it is not dangerous. But burst paint poses a serious environmental threat to those living in the house: people are forced to inhale dust containing lead compounds... This situation is especially undesirable for children. Even low concentrations of the poison can cause problems with the central nervous system, blood cells, brain and kidneys.

If you are going to freshen up the paint, in no case do it yourself. Hire professionals. They work in protective clothing, they have the necessary skills. They will be able to remove paint from any surface, contaminating the space around them to a minimum.

10. Air fresheners and cleaning products

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have concluded that small, unventilated rooms (which are the type of bathrooms and toilets) are not good enough to be thoroughly cleaned with modern means. As a result of such cleaning, the level of toxins in our bathrooms literally goes off scale. The reason for this is a mixture of two basic chemicals based on ethylene glycol and terpenes.

Ethylene glycol is harmful by inhalation and in contact with skin. It causes weakness, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations. Terpenes themselves are not toxic, but reacting with ozone and other substances, they produce toxic combinations.

Don't turn cleaning the bathroom into a chemical attack on your own body. Reduce the amount of cleaning products. Most of them are quite possible to do without.
