Extract from birch chaga. The benefits of chaga. Birch chaga: medicinal properties, indications and contraindications. Chaga herbal face mask

Many have heard about unusual mushroom called chaga, which can cure serious illnesses, including cancer. This mushroom looks like a growth. It grows mainly on birches and is considered rare.

We will tell you about the intricacies of using the mushroom, the general benefits for humans, possible harm, contraindications, how to properly brew and use the beneficial properties of the medicinal infusion for health.

What it looks like and what it is used for

It is a perennial mushroom that grows all year round , regardless of the season and air temperature. As long as the birch, which has become the place where chaga grows, is alive, the mushroom itself will live. Sometimes it grows on other trees (alder, aspen), but it is not advised to use it - there will be nothing valuable and useful in it.

A real birch mushroom used in medicinal purposes, can be identified by the following features:

  • looks like a large irregular growth;
  • color - almost black or deep brown, closer to the tree trunk - lighter;
  • numerous yellow thin veins are visible at the point of contact with the trunk.

After collection, it is subject to drying for long-term storage and subsequent use.

A quality, ready-to-eat mushroom looks like this:

  • in the form of pieces of different shapes, up to 10 cm;
  • the top layer is black, then brown, with thin veins;
  • the smell is pleasant, reminiscent of forest grasses.

If the mushroom is wet, slippery to the touch, has a musty aroma, crumbles - all this indicates poor quality, violation of the rules for collection and storage. It cannot be used internally.

Features of the chemical composition, photo

The most useful, maximally enriched mushroom is harvested in spring, or late winter, in February. According to its effect on the body, it acts as a bioactive stimulant.

Update: October 2018

Chaga is a sterile (in other words, sterile) form of the fungus Tinder fungus or Inonotus canted. Belongs to the genus Inonotus, department of Basidiomycetes. The more famous name - birch mushroom - chaga got a reason: it most often grows on birches (species are fluffy and drooping), less often it affects other crops - mountain ash, alder, beech, elm, maple. It is widespread in birch groves, in the taiga and forest-steppe of the central zone of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, where it grows almost everywhere. Found in the north of the United States, in Korea.

Chaga can be called a unique mushroom, whose life begins with a small spore Inonotus obliquus. Getting on the damaged area of the tree bark, the spore germinates, typical ridge-like growths are formed. Infection leads to white wood rot.

In the false nucleus, light yellow stripes and spots are formed, which subsequently merge and expand. In rotten wood, the annual layers are easily separated one from one. A brown protective zone is formed around the rot, black lines can be seen inside, and rusty mycelium blotches are visible on the fracture. Growing up to sometimes huge sizes, chaga accumulates in its body useful material received from wood.

Morphological description and botanical features

The body of the chaga appears 3-4 years after infection. It is represented by black crested growths of irregular shape, pierced with veins of colorless hyphae. Sizes: 4 to 40 cm in diameter, 10 to 15 cm in thickness. In section, the body has a dense structure of dark brown color. At the point of contact with the tree, the pulp is colored reddish-brown. The surface of the growths is riddled with cracks.

The life span is 10–20 years: the mushroom grows and deepens into the wood, after a few years, the fruit body of the fungus with spores, which consists of tubules, sprouts on the opposite side. It develops under the bark, hyphae can spread 0.5-1 m along the length of the trunk. When the spores mature, ridge-like outgrowths are formed that penetrate the bark, exposing a brown-brown hymenophore. At first, the spores are colorless, then turn reddish. The walls of the spores are thick, with one or two drops of oil inside. Over time, the tree dies.

Collection and procurement

The mushroom is harvested at any time, but it is easier to find it in the period from late autumn and until spring, when there is no foliage. In addition, during this period, the greatest biological activity of the fungus is noted. To search, they go deeper into the forest (it is not recommended to shoot from trees along busy roads), choose strong trees.

It is not worth cutting off the bowl from dead or diseased trees, the bases of old trees - the activity of such chaga is insignificant. Old chaga is exceptionally black in color, which has a very big size and already crumble, also does not fit.

The growth is cut off with an ax under the base, the loose light-colored part is cut off. The raw material needed for harvesting is the outer part and the solid center, without any residues of wood and loose mass.

The collected chaga is cut into pieces of about 10 cm, dried in dryers or ovens at t not higher than 60 ºС. In summer, ventilated attics and closed sheds are suitable for drying. Store in a tightly closed jar, exclude the ingress of moisture, since chaga can quickly become moldy. Shelf life is 2 years.

Chemical composition

A complex of biologically active substances was found in the composition of the fungus:

  • water-soluble pigments combined into a chromogenic polyphenol-carbon complex;
  • triterpenoids;
  • agaricic, oxalic, acetic, formic, butyric, para-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic acids;
  • sterols;
  • resin;
  • polysaccharides;
  • lignin;
  • cellulose;
  • tannins;
  • a large amount of macro- and microelements, especially potassium and manganese.

The therapeutic effect in malignant tumors is associated with the action of sterols and agaric acid.

Useful properties of chaga mushroom

  • Possesses antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Tannins are involved in the formation of a protective film on the mucous organs.
  • It has tonic and tonic effects. Many natural biogenic stimulants and organic acids that make up the fungus have a powerful therapeutic effect on the body, normalize the balance of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions.
  • It has an antitumor effect when used internally and externally. Decoctions and tinctures of the plant improve the condition of tumors of any localization, reduce pain, and help strengthen the immune system. When treating the initial stages of oncology, chaga inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
  • Reduces blood cholesterol.
  • It has anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Reduces blood sugar levels.
  • Possesses hemostatic properties.
  • Has a diuretic and choleretic effect.
  • Has an analgesic effect.
  • Reduces perspiration.
  • It has a positive effect on the state of the central nervous system: it activates metabolism in the brain tissue, which leads to an increase in the bioelectric activity of the brain.
  • Increases the body's defense reactions (the effect proved in experiments), has a pronounced adaptogenic effect.
  • Contributes to the attenuation of exacerbation chronic diseases and improving the general immune status.
  • Enhances the cytostatic effect of cyclophosphamide.

Indications for the use of chaga mushroom

Old-timers argue that there is no disease in which chaga would be ineffective: the unique properties of the birch mushroom are able to cope with everything. Perhaps this statement is exaggerated, but the fact that the use of chaga helps prevent many diseases is indisputable.

What chaga helps from (indications):

  • Oncological diseases (about them - below);
  • Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, inflammatory diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary system;
  • Diseases of the joints and muscles;
  • Neuralgia;
  • Diseases of the CVS (atherosclerosis, arrhythmia);
  • Skin diseases (eczema, psoriasis, frostbite, wounds, inflammation);
  • Pathology of the male and female reproductive systems;
  • Inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity (periodontal disease);
  • Decreased immunity associated with lingering illnesses, operations, etc.;
  • Metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus;
  • Hyperglycemia (including those not associated with diabetes mellitus);
  • Excess weight.

Peculiarities of chaga treatment

Medicines based on chaga are taken by two main schemes:

  • in short courses of 7-14 days several times a year, taking long breaks;
  • long courses of 3-5 months and with short breaks of 7-10 days.

With the first treatment regimen, the therapeutic effect is expected longer. Such a course is preferable for the prevention of tumor metastasis after good treatment results and for their consolidation. The second scheme provides a quick healing effect.

Unless otherwise stated in the prescription, the medication is taken half an hour before meals... During the treatment, a vegetable and dairy diet is recommended with restriction of meat, fats, smoked meats, canned food, hot spices, sweets, and alcohol. You can add bran bread and non-carbonated mineral water to the diet. Do not inject intravenous glucose and penicillin during the treatment of chaga.

The use of chaga preparations for medicinal purposes is possible only after the diagnosis has been established, especially if long-term treatment regimens are being considered. It is very important to adhere to the dosage regimen, not to increase or decrease the dose. During treatment, you can observe 2 phases of the effect of drugs on the body.

  • In the first phase, relief is noted, pain and inflammation are significantly reduced (after about 2 weeks of administration).
  • The second phase begins after a couple of months: the general condition improves, the person feels well, and upon examination, it can be found that the disease has receded.

Chaga in the treatment of oncology

They say that people who drink a decoction and infusion of chaga instead of tea do not get cancer. Chaga also helps those who have cancer. Many physicians recommend chaga for cancer monotherapy and advise patients to skip the main treatment. But this approach is fundamentally wrong - one must weigh the benefits of chaga and the harm that the lack of treatment can render. Precious time can be wasted to not only stop the disease, but also save the patient's life.

Nevertheless, the use of chaga as an adjuvant therapy in oncology gives good results and a stable effect without relapses. The highest therapeutic effect is observed in people with the initial stages of cancer: general health improves, pains go away, and tumor growth stops.

The choice of means and methods of application in the treatment of cancer depends on the condition of the patient. In any case, the doctor in charge of the patient should be informed of the intention to be treated with chaga.

Chaga is effective in combination with calendula, St. John's wort, calamus and plantain - these plants themselves have anti-cancer effects, and in combination, they enhance each other's actions.

The tinder fungus or chaga, as it is called in folk medicine, is not difficult to notice on a tree trunk: a swollen nostril growth that turns black on the cracked bark. Such a "guest" does only harm to a tree, but rare healing powers are in store for a person in a mushroom. The beneficial properties and use of chaga for therapeutic purposes is a well-known medical fact today.

Mycological characteristics

Tinder fungus (Latin name - inonotus obliquus) belongs to the family of Gimenochaet basidiomycetes. Its spores, scattered in the air, penetrate into damaged areas on the bark of a tree and germinate in them, feeding on the sap of the plant.

In the fourth year, the mycelium protrudes outward in the form of a black, shapeless formation. This is the chaga birch mushroom. In the northern regions of Russia, it is called the birch lip.

How to prepare

The mushroom is taken only from live or just felled birches, since only in this way valuable substances are preserved in it. The loose inner part is removed from the build-up. Chaga should not be harvested near highways and industrial centers, since the fruiting body absorbs toxic metals and compounds.

The mushroom is crumbled into slices of 8-10 cm and laid out for drying in ventilated rooms or heated in ovens with a temperature of no more than 60 degrees. The taste of the finished raw material is bitter, there is no smell.

The health-improving role of the birch fungus is so great that researchers continue to closely study the plant, discovering new medicinal properties chaga.

These are tinder fungi, of which the chaga mushroom belongs. While settling on trees, these fungi cause white rot of its core, which further leads to the death of the tree.

Found in Russia, Siberia, the Far East, the North Caucasus and the Urals

What is chaga?

Chaga mushroom or tinder fungus, Latin name which Inonotus obliquus, popularly known as "black birch mushroom" or birch chaga. It grows in places of damage to the tree bark, has an irregular shape, the diameter can be up to 40 cm, the thickness is about 15 cm, and the weight sometimes reaches 5 kg. The inner color of the fungus is dark brown with white veins.

Chaga can settle both on living trees and on dead ones. It reproduces, like all mushrooms, by spores that germinate under the bark of a tree, forming a network of mushroom filaments - mycelium. Growing, the mycelium breaks through the bark and a black growth appears on the tree, with cracks and uneven edges.

The body of the fungus consists of tubes inclined towards the surface. The mushroom has a dense pulp that hardens when dried. When separated from the tree, the young chaga mushroom has a whitish tint, while the old mushrooms are black-brown.

Nature has endowed humanity with a huge number of healing plants, which have been used since ancient times by healers and herbal healers.

Chaga or birch mushroom, as a miracle cure, has also been used for a very, very long time.

The first written evidence of this mushroom appeared in the annals of Russian chroniclers of the 11th century, where a cure for lip cancer was described with the help of a decoction of a birch mushroom of the Grand Duke of Russia, Vladimir Monomakh.

The famous physician of the Middle Ages Abu Ali ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna, did not disregard chaga. In his writings, he describes the properties of this mushroom and how to use it as a remedy.

For residents of Siberia and far east the birch mushroom has always been a panacea in the treatment of many diseases. There are descriptions dating from the 16th century, in which chaga was used to treat the stomach, intestines, cancer, male and female genital organs, treat boils, and sore joints.

In the eighteenth century. reference books and Russian herbalists appeared, where there are also recipes for the treatment of various diseases, including malignant tumors. Traditional healers, along with recipes, suggested drinking tea steamed with a birch mushroom so as not to get sick.
It should also be noted that in places where the chaga mushroom grows, the population often drinks it instead of black or green tea, and people there get less cancer.

How and when is chaga harvested

In order to use chaga for medicinal purposes and to collect it correctly, it must be remembered that only the chaga mushroom growing on living trees and only on birches is useful.

On dead trees, chaga is destroyed and becomes unusable for medicinal purposes. If the trees grow in a damp place, you cannot use the mushroom growing on the lower part of the trunk.

Chaga also needs to be distinguished from other polypores, which are shaped like a hoof with a downward plane. There are also non-medicinal tinder fungi that have the shape of a semicircle, grayish or brownish in color, with a smooth surface. They are attached to the tree trunk with their central part and easily come off, unlike the chaga mushroom. Chaga tastes bitter and odorless.

Chaga, unlike other polypores, consists of three layers:
- external, having a black, resinous or black-brown color, bumpy and cracked surface,
- the middle layer is dense, granular at the fracture, brown-brown color,
- and the inner one is brownish-reddish, with white-yellow veins, without a spongy layer.

Chaga is harvested at any time of the year. For treatment, use the middle of the mushroom, cutting and drying which, they make decoctions, infusions, including alcoholic ones.

An important element contained in large quantities in chaga is manganese, an activator of many enzymes. Scientists have determined that the main thing in chaga is the presence of a chromogenic polyphenolcarbon complex, which has the highest biological activity - it is a powerful biostimulant that is not found in any other tinder fungus.

Thanks to this unusual composition, chaga has a positive effect on the metabolism, nervous system and immune responses of the body. Chaga relieves intoxication well.

The use of chaga in the treatment of oncological diseases is associated with such a useful ability of it as the removal of toxins from the body, which are formed in tumors. It should be noted that the chaga mushroom can be useful and effective in all types of tumors.
