Better is easier, but better
Most often (but not always) a music competition, one way or another, is built in the form of an ordinary pop concert. This is exactly what the KVN players of the 60s did. They lined up ready-made musical numbers one after another in order to change the tempo and mass character, as well as to increase the expected success by the end of the competition. However, do not forget that the first song should not be the weakest either. It was at that time that the classical staging form of the "choir with soloists" was invented, which was quite successfully exploited by the inhabitants of Odessa until the mid-90s. And between the songs, the most ordinary entertainments were made - individual or pair, consisting of a set of reprises, the last of which served as a conclusion to the next musical number.
The first NSU team brought the form of such a divertissement to filigree simplicity. They no longer needed a choir - almost all the numbers, except for the final song, were performed by soloists or a duet. And the final song was not always written for a music competition. They practically did not even use dancers, the role of which was previously quite effectively performed by the choir. And all this feast of the spirit was always united by the same parody-cheeky entertainer (Vladimir Duda), whose texts were also built according to an ideally simple principle: two “killer” reprises of the “news” type, of which the second, as a rule, brought the viewer closer to the topic the next issue and - the classic ironic announcement of the number. Perhaps, the biggest dramatic sophistication that Novosibirsk residents allowed themselves in the final of 1991 was a parody of the New Year's “Blue Light”, in which there were already a couple of presenters and “guests of the studio,” who, however, did not say a word.
That, in fact, is all the drama! And this simple scheme has worked, works and will always work for the very reason that divertissement is such a familiar form for the viewer that in any KVN performance it is a parody of itself. This is, in fact, analogous to the “team have entered the stage” situation in the greeting. And this scheme also has its undeniable advantages and undeniable disadvantages.
Let's start with the benefits. The first and most obvious is the simplicity of the drama! And this very simplicity always plays into the hands of the quality of humor, because it allows you to easily insert into the context your best reprises on absolutely any topic, without wasting time on specifying any special situation. Likewise, you can easily swap musical numbers in the competition, having noticed, say, during a rehearsal that their success rating turned out to be completely different from what you originally thought. Finally, such a scheme ideally allows you to introduce the viewer into the context of the song itself, if you like - “explain what you need to laugh at”.
Let's remind that the perception of the situation by the viewer and, moreover, the plot directly from the text of the song is difficult. Plot songs in general are a very rare thing, although they have existed for many centuries. These are ballads. But in this case, you must warn viewer that the ballad will now be performed.
It often happens that a song, like a joke, initially arises simply from a pun of a well-known line or a technical shape-shifter. And then the meaning of the number has to be looked for additionally, “to select”. Example? Please!
In 1995, the Tbilisi team “Real Toastmasters” brought a nice synchrobuffonade to their first game: the soldier's choir sang twice accelerated “Don't-cry-girl”. It was well staged, but it looked completely pointless. And only when it came to mind that it was “Chorus of the rapid response group Russian army, which for the third year already has not been able to leave the territory of Georgia ”(then this issue was very topical), - the number began to be perceived with a bang.
So, the benefits are there! It remains only to find out why something so simple and clear form has not been seen for a long time on the KVN stage?
The point is that any “ideal” form implies “ideal” musical numbers. For the Novosibirsk people - with their forty authors, hundreds of reprises and a couple of dozen songs claiming to be performed in one competition - it was quite suitable. Moreover, any complication (and experiments in this direction were already in full swing) were deliberately rejected by them, since it could only interfere with the perception of truly brilliant texts. For the same reason, the choirs and singing songs that “chew” the words were abandoned, and therefore there were no distracting dancers.
But if the luxury of forty good authors is not provided for in your team, or, in the end, you are simply drawn to experiment, then you will most likely be interested in reading this chapter to the end.

You won't say goodbye to the song ...
The music competition in KVN is notable for the greatest variety of genres. It's just that, unlike, say, a greeting, it initially lacks a sufficiently strict genre definition. By and large, the only criterion for the "musicality" of the competition is the presence of more or less music, and from this point of view, any competition in the current KVN (except, perhaps, the warm-up and the captain's) can be called musical.
One way or another, most of the music competitions use the form of "presenter with a concert", which is "put on" some additional situation.
An elementary option, known even to school amateur performances, is a rehearsal or preparation for this very concert. Nevertheless, this technique has more than once led to success on the big KVN stage. (For example, “rehearsal of a factory holiday” in the semifinals-99 of the Belarusian State University, “rehearsal of the opening of“ Kinotavr ”near Sochi and“ rehearsal of the Kremlin concert ”near Tomsk in the quarter-finals -2000.) Another no less common option is to add a scandalous backstage situation to the concert ... It was on this that the entertainment of the famous Tomsk “musical” of the quarterfinals of 1998 was built, in which “in the village of Liverpool” the local director of the club gave advice to the visiting host.
The shape of the divertissement can be hidden deeper. How it was done, let's say “Four Tatars” at 1 \ 4-98, having lowered their concert into an underground passage. However, if the word “deeper” is read not so formally, it is easy to understand that the same form lies in the Tomsk conversation between Mozart and Salieri (1 \ 8-98), and in the graceful course of the KhAI with the metro (1 \ 8-95), when the theme of the song was set simply by announcing a stop or transfer to another line ("The next station is Angelico-Varumskaya, transition to the Agutinskaya line!"). This also includes countless parodies of television programs (“Musical Ring” of “New Armenians” in the semifinals-99.)
The benefits of “situational divertissement” are undeniable. And the biggest of them is the uncertainty in such a competition of the relationship "music - text". Musical numbers are a specific thing, and not everyone succeeds in them. And here it is theoretically possible to "pull out" the competition, having only one full-fledged musical number. The introductory and final songs are added to it, a couple of musical "pokes" are added, and - all this together looks quite musical! Another thing is that then the idea should already be original, and the text should be really funny.
Perhaps the first to do this were “Makhachkala vagrants”, showing in the final “musical” 1996 “Dagestanskie Vesti” - a parody of “news of Dagestan television”. There was really only one, and a rather weak number, which today even few people will remember. But a perfectly thought out and played out situation not only brought success in the game, but even entered the KVN Annals.
I must say that at the end of the 90s, many teams often began to abuse this technique, frankly shifting the center of gravity of the music competition to text "spacers". But alas! - the viewer reveals any deception sooner or later, and what was forgiven to the discoverers can now cause frank irritation. So, if you want to play KVN, then sooner or later you will have to learn how to make musical numbers.

Some people like it hot ...
Now let's talk about musical exoticism. Moreover, it was some very exotic forms of music competitions that made a splash in their time, and now they are rightly considered KVN classics.
Let's start with a shape called “musical collage”. Its essence lies in the fact that in a row "non-stop" a lot of short fragments are performed, more or less flowing into each other. At one time, the inhabitants of Odessa brought onto the stage in droves the heroes of "Slave Izaura", who were then close to the heart of any ordinary TV viewer, which allowed them to speak solo, in groups or all together on any burning topics, of which, thank God, there were enough in those days. It was there that such “classic lines” sounded like:
There is no need to be sad, friend, -
Not our native in Brazil
Three Marxists, three cheerful friends
They founded their own merry system.
And:
The train will leave from Red Square,
The Jews will move, but who will remain? ..
The main technological merit of this form is the possibility of using short song excerpts, which, as you know, are born much easier and more often than it is possible to come across a worthy topic for a full-fledged musical number. But linking such passages into a collage creates the feeling of a “big musical canvas”.

At the same time, a very specific form of a “short musical piece” was born, which was invented and “used 100%” by the Dnipropetrovskites for a decade. The basic laws were guessed by them right away in the very first musical number, which completed the final DZ of 1988 - “Transfer me to self-financing” (to the music of S. Nikitin “Transfer me through the Maidan”).
The classical form of such a number is based on a verse form, with each verse being sung by a new hero (or a group of heroes). The illusion of dramatic development is achieved by the fact that the heroes gradually appear and accumulate on the stage, so that in the finale, already with a powerful chorus, they sing something already conclusively moralizing. (However, the heroes can be immediately on the stage, as in the famous "Emmanuelle" or "Gathering" of Russian writers, but then they gradually come into play.)
Actually, there are no other secrets of form in the Dnepropetrovsk “plays”. But! In their musical numbers were not only magnificent texts, absolutely precisely worked according to all KVN canons - that is, every four lines was a full-fledged reprise. There was something much more important and complex in them, which, in fact, gave the KVN team the right to call itself the KVN Theater: these were not classical KVN "expositions", but plays!
It is no coincidence that almost no one dared to use the Dnipropetrovsk uniform, when a one song contest appeared in the KVN arsenal. Although, we admit, it was invented with an eye on the DGU team. However, the cautious KVN players preferred a win-win divertissement in this version as well, contriving to write several different numbers for one melody or simply perverting endlessly in arrangements, modulations and playful "pictures", composing one endless musical number.
And yet we urge you to dare! What if it works out? You just need to do this in advance, and not two days before the game. In two days it will definitely not work out ...

Finally, there is a very exotic musical scheme. True, it is extremely problematic to fit into the modern timing of the music competition. However, in last years a competition called “musical homework”, For which the musical is, in principle, ideally suited.
Another thing is that a musical in the classical sense is a dramatic work in which songs are inextricably linked with action. True, the genre complexity of the task binds your KVN capabilities hand and foot. Nevertheless, the musical in KVN still exists, albeit in a very peculiar globally parody form.
In 1996, at first, “Makhachkala vagabonds” intuitively groped it and brought their “17 Moments of Spring” to the Music Festival in Jurmala. It was very funny, and they rightfully won the "Kivin in Gold" then. But when they decided to do something similar in the semifinals, it was very painful to analyze what they had actually done.
And then it turned out that they really ran into a "gold mine": a parody of a cult plot! Indeed, if the viewer already knows this plot thoroughly, and even remembers individual episodes literally, no special plot for his own play needs to be built. Suffice it to hint that, in principle, you already know all this. And after that - go for a walk, I don't want to! Turn everything upside down and “combine the incompatible”! And now the Caucasian Stirlitz appears, who is escorted to his native village, and Hitler declares that “he used to be so angry because he didn’t have a bicycle”.
In the semifinals, residents of Makhachkala, in the same genre, brilliantly developed the theme of Rambo (or, more precisely, American military fighters in general). And then ... faced with an insoluble problem. It turned out that there are not so many cult plots and heroes at all! As a result, the bet on "prison fighters", which the "vagabonds" made in the superfinal-97, did not lead to the same success. In addition, it became obvious that even a parody plot must be supported by the overwhelming mass of game episodes, and the oversaturation of such a competition with detailed musical numbers, even if perfectly executed, leads to the fact that it “crumbles”.
Apparently, after this failure of the inventors of the genre themselves, KVN players considered him killed in the bud. And again, only the BSU team dared to do something similar, and only at the Music Festival in 2000, being by this time already super champions. This time the “Three Musketeers” went to the “mockery”. Moreover, the chosen genre was much closer to the classical musical than that of the Makhachkala residents. There was no longer an insane mixture of cult phrases and musical styles. In fact, a certain parody story was proposed, which nevertheless had to be built, and all the musical numbers were honestly taken from the popular TV movie. And although objectively all this was very, very good, in the context of a music festival, the performance seemed too “loose” and stretched out. (Which, by the way, proves once again that the viewer has absolutely clear criteria for the perception of specific competitions - criteria that must not be violated!). Recent examples: "Olesya" of the "PE" team.

In conclusion, I would like to dwell on one obvious paradox. Why are such traditional musical genres as opera, ballet or at least operetta practically not used in the music competition? Moreover, all this was used very actively and successfully by STEMs?
Generally speaking, it would be strange if no one in this area had time to experiment. And the experiments, of course, were, and - not very successful, which, in fact, discouraged the followers.
The operetta, most likely due to inexperience, was made in its first game in 1986 by the Moscow Art Institute team. This, however, was not even a musical, but a publicistic contest “Welcome to Complain”. MAGMA “went” to the opera in the first game of the 1994 season. They also made a small ballet number in the semifinals of that season, which at the same time almost exhausted the possibilities of the genre in KVN, since they parodied it as a whole: Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky in french coats and tutus took a few steps across the stage, and then breathed heavily and bowed to the audience. ... Everything.
As for the opera and operetta, they turned out to be extremely cumbersome for the presentation of the text. Just like in natural theater, the viewer, having tuned in to such a genre, immediately ceases to listen carefully to the words and pays more attention to singing, which for KVN, as you understand, is destructive.
However, in the 2000 quarterfinals, the opera number “Eugene Onegin” ventured to show Tomsk. And the fears were confirmed. In the process of rehearsals, it had to be greatly reduced and additionally amused with frankly unoperative details.
Generally speaking, theoretically, it is possible to come up with a parody of the classical music genre. Only for this, most likely, you need to directly somehow sing or dance in a very funny way. And to come up with this, you see, is much more difficult than just a couple of text jokes!

The format of this competition came from the reduction of airtime, when a complete musical task is very difficult to watch with a large number of teams and "unlimited" airtime.

Another history of the competition is rooted in Regionalki and Tsentralki, where at the initial and 1/4 final stages you need to be able to write or learn to write finished contests, with an idea, plot and minimal drama. And there, as a rule, there are a large number of teams in the game. And watching 8 homework in one game will be very difficult even for an inveterate KVN fan. For this, they came up with such a competition.

The essence of the competition: in 2-3 minutes you need to show a number with a move, story or idea that will be interesting to the viewer for these same 2-3 minutes. The difference from the thumbnail or number in the greeting is that the number in the greeting, you can show both 5 seconds and 15 and 20, depending on how interesting it will be and how much jokes will fit into it.

Tip: You shouldn't write a contest out of jokes. The queen of the competition will be the story and its ending. This is how films, serials, sitcoms are written, therefore, KVN is not an innovator here. Many editors also advise to write a contest for 7 minutes, so that, without losing a story or idea, only funny jokes could be left there.

Difference of Muznomer from the Competition of one issue.

A musical number cannot exist without a musical component. Even the editor of the Higher League, Dmitry Kolchin, said: "Remove music from the competition, and if the competition continues to work, then it is not musical."

A competition of one number can be a musical number. On the contrary, no.

What to start from when writing a competition for one issue or music number.

Of course, there are eternal pieces that every person in the audience knows. There are not so many of them, and one must understand that they have long been worked out and written out in KVN. You can write something new in the subject of well-known works only through the prism of your team, or through a bright character.

News and events that take place here and now come to the rescue. Any relevant news will be clear to the audience and the jury, therefore, any new news occasion will be your opportunity to be on this topic for the first time. And, therefore, the most ridiculous.

Tip: don't go overboard with the idea and its development. People come to KVN for humor and jokes. Therefore, it works perfectly here, as in STEM - interesting story... Quite simply - a joke. “Lev issued a decree that it is forbidden to use foul language on trees. The hare did not see the decree and is still writing, ”that's all. There is an interesting story that I want to watch. You can put it in two minutes, knowing what will happen at the end.

History: a song about the mayor of a small provincial town. Pay attention to the motive. A very famous song for every person in the audience and at the screen. For your musical number, it is best to take famous and popular songs.

Content: a large number of jokes combined into one story.

Advice: if there is a competition for one number in the game, oddly enough, it is better to prepare a musical number, because jokes set to music are perceived by the audience much better. There is, of course, the possibility that all the teams in the game will make a music competition, but that's another story altogether ...
