Vangelis biography. Vangelis: biography

He was born on March 29 1943

Do you think it is possible to compose music without knowing the notes? It turns out, yes. Moreover, it is possible, like Vangelis, to create masterpieces and be famous. And here the merit is not only first-class modern technology, but, first of all, the talent of Vangelis himself - one of the greatest composers of our time, the real "Mozart of the XX century".

His full name sounds magnificent and majestic. In it, as in all Greek, the romance of ancient myths sounds - Evangelos Odyssey Papathanassiou.

As a creative pseudonym, understandable to the English-speaking public, he chose an abbreviated version of the first name - Vangelis (Vangelis). But, perhaps, the middle name, Odysseus, would be much more suitable for him. An odyssey of the 20th century musical, whose whole life was spent in constant wanderings - across genres and countries.

Let's take a look at all the work of Vangelis and be surprised - in what genres this composer has not tried himself! Beat and rock 'n' roll, pop ballads and art-rock, avant-garde and ambient, new age and electronics - hardly any other composer in our century has such a wide genre range. And in any, even the most simple song composed by Vangelis, you will find a unique imprint of his talent: majestic symphony and special, unique purity and transparency of sound. His musical phrases either fall on the listener with a violent waterfall, or fall like snowflakes in the crystal clear winter air ... And each note has its own, special character.

The uniqueness of Vangelis is manifested in many other ways. Unlike many other composers of the new age genre, who bake disc after disc, like pies, without stopping, Vangelis very carefully and meticulously approaches his own work, carefully selecting the music that will be conveyed to the mass audience. And at the same time, amazingly beautiful melodies are born - music for films, performances, ballets and operas - which, by the will of the author, were never destined to see the light of day on the disc. It's hard to believe, but even his most famous soundtrack, the music for Ridley Scott's cult film "Blade Runner", he released with great reluctance only eight years (!) After the release of the screen.

At the same time, Vangelis, with a truly Greek breadth of soul, generously presents songs to his friends - performers of Greek origin. The names of many of them will not tell anything not only to us, but also to the Greeks themselves, and their records are sold only because they contain compositions created by the greatest Greek Maestro ...

He was born on March 29 1943 of the year. He grew up in Athens, where from childhood he was surrounded by the sea and a magnificent huge evergreen garden. The musical talents of the young Vangelis became apparent already at the age of 4, and for the first time his music sounded from the stage only two years later! However, when the parents tried to give the boy a professional musical education, it turned out that he did not obey formal education at all, because he stubbornly did not want to follow any instructions. “I have always felt that I should not borrow knowledge from others, because my own experience and development is of paramount importance,” explains Vangelis. At the same time, in the future, he fondly remembered his mother, who especially persistently sought to inspire the boy to play the piano. "I was almost tied to a chair in front of the instrument, like Mozart!"

After leaving school, Vangelis caught the "virus" of Beatlemania, which was then mercilessly tormenting the world, and, together with several comrades, organized the Formynx group. The result is logical - the first real rock band in Greece gathered thousands of music fans at the stadiums! Her repertoire, however, included not only rock 'n' rolls - there was also a place for arrangements of Greek melodies and pop numbers from the repertoire of Frank Sinatra.

Fast forward to 1968 year. The fascist coup of the "black colonels" found Vangelis in Paris, where he and his friends Demis Roussos and Lucas Sideras gnawed the granite of science within the walls of the Sorbonne. The decision not to return to their homeland was taken unanimously ... But the trio, which remained patriotic in Greece, decided to inscribe the name of their native country in the history of music: thus a new group was born, called "Aphrodite's Child". accompaniment, his vociferous friend Demis Roussos was in charge of the vocals, and the modest Lucas limited himself to the role of the guitarist.

At first glance, it was difficult to predict the future popularity of the group. "Children of Aphrodite" from the very beginning set a course for elite art-rock, popular then only among aesthetic youth. However, sweet ballads, performed by the unusually high voice of Demis Roussos and the exotic image of the group, which often appeared before the public in tunics, did their job. Their very first album "Rain and Tears" ("Rain and Tears") brought them worldwide popularity, and subsequently all released singles for three years invariably occupied the first place in the European charts.

V 1971 year, having increased their instrumental possibilities with the inclusion of guitarist and drummer Silver Koulouris, they, with the clear leadership of Vangelis, recorded an electronic oratorio "666 - Apocalypse of John" on a double album. Set to music, "Apocalypse" became one of the first records to open the genre of electronic music. The keyboards used provided a powerful polyphonic sound complemented by original and varied vocal effects. The album to this day remains the main disc of the group, although at that time its appearance was greeted with caution - an unusually weighted, experimental sound pushed many of its fans away from the group.

Immediately after the release of the album, friends, quite unexpectedly for their fans, decide to disband the group. The reason for this was not a quarrel or financial squabbles - to this day, the members of Aphrodites Child are on friendly terms. And the help of Vangelis was in many ways the reason for the ascent of the new star of European pop music, Demis Roussos, who more than once performed the compositions of Vangelis. As for Lucas Sideras, after the breakup of the group, he decided to leave music altogether, taking a job as a school teacher.

Vangelis set off on a free flight - without a penny of money, but with a sea of new ideas ... And soon, in 1970 year, he first had the opportunity to record on the record. The first disc of the young composer was the soundtrack to the film "Sex Power" by Henry Chapier. The beginning of his solo career was very spicy: the film was shot in the genre of "easy porn". Today, however, it would be appreciated rather as erotica - beautiful and well-filmed. And at the same time decorated with melodies of Vangelis ...

Over the next two years, Vangelis released four more discs - diverse but equally commercially disastrous experimental albums. He signs these discs with the name Vangelis Papathanassiou and subsequently strongly protests against their release on CD. Only an album 1973 of the year, Earth was officially released on CD in 1999 year, but it was distributed only in Greece.

Fame came to him a year later, when Vangelis began working with French filmmaker Frederic Rossif. For him, Vangelis composed the music for the film L "Apocalypse Des Animaux and for the trilogy of films Contique Des Creatures, dedicated to the works of Picasso, Georges Mathieu and Georges Breig." Vangelisa - light, harmony, quiet tenderness ... It is on this disc that one of his most popular and romantic compositions is recorded, the gentle "Sea Girl" - La Petite Fille De La Mer, which today remains an indispensable attribute of collections such as Romantic Collection.

V 1974 year, Vangelis, already a global star, moved from Paris to London, where his candidacy is seriously considered as a possible replacement for keyboardist Rick Wakeman in the group "Yes". However, after two weeks of rehearsals, Vangelis left, saying that his musical concept was too far from that of the band. It was during these two weeks that he became friends with Yes soloist Jon Anderson, which ensured their subsequent joint work, which continues to this day.

V 1975 Vangelis signed a contract with RCA and founded his own recording studio, Nemo Studios, which Vangelis later referred to as his research laboratory. The first album that Vangelis released under the RCA label was called "Heaven and Hell" ("Heaven and Hell"). Technorok Vangelis, who draws his ideas from classical music, was presented in the album with brilliance and excellent technique. The musician played all instruments - from the large piano to various percussion devices, and the vocalist of "Yes" John Anderson wrote the lyrics to the song "So Long Ago So Clear" and sang the vocals in it.

It was extraordinary, outstanding music that instantly brought Vangelis to the forefront of popularity in the United States and Europe. From that moment on, any album released by Vangelis instantly became popular and sold out all over the world in huge numbers. Only critics remained in bewilderment: each new album of Vangelis belongs to a completely new, unusual style! As a result, the dubious label "symphonist" was glued to the obstinate Greek and calmed down on that, at once putting aside all his experiments ...

In the late 70s - early 80s, Vangelis devotes a lot of time to joint projects. Together with John Anderson, he records four successful albums under the Jon And Vangelis label (it is fair to say that these discs contain more of John than of Vangelis), records two albums of “old” Greek hymns together with Irene Papas (published only in Greece), produces recordings of Demis Roussos ...

V 1981 The film "Chariots Of Fire" ("Chariots of Fire") is released with the music of Vangelis. For this music he received an Oscar and fame. Unfortunately, the resounding success of "Chariots Of Fire" overshadowed several interesting subsequent works by the composer. Especially disappointing for the wonderful album "Antarctica" ("Antarctica"). The harsh and majestic theme of Antarctica permeates this entire album. It was the music for the film of the same name by Japanese filmmaker Karioshi Kurahara. Incidentally, Antarctica became the highest grossing film ever made in Japan. Undeservedly forgotten are the futuristic music for the film by American director Ridley Scott "Blade Runner", which reached the audience much later, as well as the soundtrack for "Missing".

Vangelis didn't stop there. Music for the theater also attracted him, and in 1983 year he writes music for the Greek tragedy "Elektra". This performance was staged by Michael Kakayanis, and the main role was played by the already familiar Irene Papas. The performance took place in the open air at the Epidavros Greek amphitheater.

A year later, Vangelis was so inspired by the changing seasons that he released the album Soil Festivities. At the same time, he did not forget about the music for the cinema, having recorded the soundtrack for the film "The Bounty".

Vangelis is so versatile that the question itself begs: in which genre has the master not yet tried his hand? The answer is obvious: this is, of course, symphonic music. But such an annoying "misunderstanding" Vangelis corrected, and he did it as always with talent. V 1983 year he creates music for the ballet "R.B.Sque". This was followed by Wayne Eagling, Modern Prometheus and The Beauty And The Beast. Music for the ballet "The Beauty And The Beast" was specially written for the troupe of the famous "The Royal Ballet Company".

V 1984 year Vangelis unexpectedly for everyone takes part in the creation of a joint New Age album with Susan Ciani (Suzanne Ciani).

In addition to these works, the prolific Vangelis releases the album of academic music "Invisible Connections", and in 1985 year - the album of symphonic and choral music "The Mask" ("Mask").

The fashion for charity concerts did not pass by Vangelis either. Summer 1987 During the last year, he organized two concerts in Greece in Athens for the Acropolis Rescue Fund.

In the same year, another important event took place in the composer's creative life. Vangelis began to create a series of albums, each of which was supposed to be an integral work united by some inner content. They had to cover a wide range of music. The first album of this series, "Direct", appeared in 1988 year and became a notable event in the musical life. This powerful-sounding, energetic disc is one of the best among the huge number of works by Vangelis.

A year later the collection "Themes" is published. It includes compositions from Vangelis's previous discs. Several enchanting melodies which have never been published before, have given "Themes" a special beauty.

V 1990 year the next album "The City" was released, filled with specific urban sounds.

And here, taking a breath and holding our breath, let's get ready for the most interesting. For the year of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America was approaching. The famous American director Ridley Scott dedicated his film to this event, deciding after the successful Thelma and Louise to turn to the past. After collaborating with Vangelis in Blade Runner, Scott had no choice but to offer the venerable experimenter to write music for this film as well. Which is what Vangelis did.

And with what splendor! The album is filled with combinations of various sounds (experimenting with sounds is generally Vangelis's special horse) and musical styles. His compositions cover various directions - from folk tunes to symphonic parts. "Conquest Of Paradise" is the title of the soundtrack for the film " 1492 ". If Christopher Columbus did not find the heavenly tabernacle, then the music of Vangelis convinces of the opposite. The composer creates his own personal paradise. And the listener will either not notice him at all, or will be completely captured by him. Oh, and it will be difficult for him to get out of these mysterious musical thickets! Vangelis's masterpiece is at the same time consistent with the historical era of the discovery of America, and despite this, it is modern.

Life does not stand still, and now to the end 1994 the album "Blade Runner" is finally released. Long twelve years after the release of the film "Blade Runner", the famous music for it finally became available to listeners. Of course, there is something else on the album, because Vangelis also added new material - themes not included in the film.

Blade Runner stands out among the Vangelis discs. The album is strikingly laconic. Avoiding cumbersome, intrusive topics, Vangelis perfectly incorporates his electronic soundscape into the film. The music underlines the dark, claustrophobic future shown in it. Renowned critics have spoken of this album in excellent tones. Even in the opinion of these strict and important judges, Vangelis in his creation anticipated transelectronic culture by as much as a decade! In this he was helped by her wordless vocals Mary Hopkin in the song "Rachel" ("Rachel"). But who do you think was the most original part? Of course, well-known to us Demis Roussos! He sings convincingly in a fictional language on "Tales Of The Future".

V 1995 year the composer continued the series of albums, which began with "Direct" and "City". He records Voices. The album begins with a majestic-sounding composition of the same name, and at first it seems that "Voices" is just a continuation of the acclaimed " 1492 ". This assumption is confirmed by the next two monumental compositions "Echoes" and "Come To Me", but then it turns out that they were only an introduction. Vangelis cannot do without powerful, "heroic" themes! The album itself essentially begins with the composition "Ask The Mountains", in which a charming, some especially pure female voice is combined with a surprisingly gentle sound.

It is absolutely impossible to confuse the signature sound of Vangelis with something - his heroics and lyrics are completely special. Starting with "Ask the Mountains" you plunge into the mystery of the sounds of the brilliant composer. Good and austere, but full of optimism "Messages" ("Messages"), and spectacular code "Dream In An Open Place" ("Sleep in an open space"). His music can be described as limitless, it gives a sense of space.

Interestingly, according to his own statement, the favorite instruments that Vangelis considers quite expressive are the Fender 88 electric pianos, the Yamaha CP 80 and the Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer. Apparently, it is the gravitation towards their use that gives that strange unique sound that gives us the opportunity, not knowing what is being played, from the very first chords to assume that we are dealing precisely with the music of Vangelis.

In the fall of 1998, Vangelis's new album "El Greco" was released. The original version of this project was recorded in 1995 year specially for the National Gallery of Greece and is dedicated to the great artist Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), in particular, his painting St. Peter. The artist lived in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. Born on the island of Crete and spent most of his life in Spain. The album came out in 1995 year in a special design with a limited edition of 3000 CDs, each of which has its own serial number. Of course, after the release, the composer received an offer to reissue this rare album and make it available to millions of fans.

After lengthy negotiations, Vangelis adds three more original pieces to the existing material and in the fall of 1998 the updated "El Greco" is released on EastWest Records - the record company on which almost all of the composer's latest releases are published. Monumentalism, pathos, lyricism, globality, grandeur, symphony, classicism, confident, pacified, and sometimes pensive and sublime moods accompany us throughout the entire musical material.

It seems that Vangelis has long crossed the line beyond which there is a great world of Music, for which the concept of "time" does not exist. This work can be safely considered another impressionist triumph of the composer. Unlike the albums "Voices" and "Oceanic", the motives contain elements of Greek folklore and the integrity and conceptual orientation of the works are more expressed. The beauty and grandeur of El Greco's paintings are unobtrusively manifested in each change of musical passages, forms and movements. You do not leave the feeling that the sounding music has some certain living images, the obscure shadows of which are about to appear in your room ...

For several years now, Vangelis-Odysseus returned, after 20 years of wandering, to his native land - in full accordance with the ancient world. And today, Greece pays tribute to its singer - it is Vangelis who is entrusted with creating music for the most significant celebrations, such as the opening of the Olympics in Athens. His ballets are successfully performed on stage, which, alas, remain inaccessible to most of his admirers outside Greece.

To this day, Vangelis was and remains a mysterious character whom the public can rarely and fragmentarily see.

Vangelis(Greek, English Vangelis, full name Evangelos Odysseas Papatanasiou, (Greek; March 29, 1943, Volos) - Greek composer, one of the first performers of electronic music.

In 1970, he first had the opportunity to record on a record. The first disc of the young composer was the soundtrack to the film "Sex Power" by Henry Chapier. The film was shot in the genre of "light eroticism".

The next two years were probably not the best in the composer's life. Several discs released during this time were unsuccessful commercially. However, later in the life of Vangelis comes a bright streak, he meets and begins to work with the French director Frederic Rossif (Frederic Rossif). In 1974, Vangelis, already a global star, moved from Paris to London, where his candidacy is seriously considered as a possible replacement for keyboardist Rick Wakeman in the group "Yes". Together with John Anderson, he records four successful albums under the Jon And Vangelis label (it is fair to say that these discs contain more of John than of Vangelis), records two albums of “old” Greek hymns together with Irene Papas (published only in Greece), produces recordings of Demis Roussos.

British director Anthony Thomas made the film Death of a Princess in 1980, in which he used the composition "Alpha". (Death of a princess)

In 1981, the film "Chariots Of Fire" ("Chariots of Fire") was released with music by Vangelis. For this music, he was awarded an Oscar and a Grammy. The title track from the album became the only Greek song in history to top the US national charts. In 1982, he wrote the music for the film Blade Runner. Directed by Ridley Scott In 1984, Vangelis takes part in the creation of a joint New Age album with Susan Chiani.

In the early 60s, he co-founded the group "The Forminx". The ensemble performed songs in the spirit of the "Beatles" and enjoyed great popularity in their homeland. Many of The Forminx's compositions were written by Vangelis, but he composed music for other artists as well. In 1967, Papatanassiou organized his own project "The Papathanassiou Set", which evolved into the famous art team "Aphrodite" s Child ".

"Children of Aphrodite" had a good success, but the creative nature of Vangelis, the scope of the group turned out to be tight, and already in the early 70s the musician began to work on the side. In 1970, he wrote the soundtrack for the movie "Sex Power", but this work went unnoticed. More successful was Vangelis's second cinematic effort when he collaborated with French film director Frédéric Rossif on L Apocalypse Des Animaux.

Vangelis After the breakup of "Aphrodite" s Child, Papatanassiou took a deep breath and began an "official" solo career, although in 1974 they tried to recruit him to "Yes", but after two weeks of rehearsals, the artist was released again. managed to become friends with vocalist John Anderson, and subsequently they released several joint records under the label "Jon and Vangelis." In addition, Papatanassiou has featured on a number of albums by his former colleague from "Aphrodite's Child" Demis Roussos.

Commercial success came to Vangelis in 1981, when a film with his music, "Chariots Of Fire", appeared on the screens. The film received a bunch of awards, and one of them, the "Academy Award for Original Music Score", went to the author of the soundtrack. The main theme of the film was released on the single "Titles", which (albeit briefly) managed to top the Billboard charts.

Vangelis In the future, Vangelis continued to work on soundtracks, the most famous of which were "Blade Runner" and "The Bounty". However, working in cinematography brought the musician not only honors, but also some problems. So, in 1987, he had to go through a legal showdown on charges of plagiarism. The lawsuit brought against Vangelis by his fellow countryman Stavros Logarides was that the title theme from "Chariots" was a copy of Stavros' composition "City of Violets". Papatanassiou had to drag his synthesizers into the courtroom and use them to defend the right to his own creativity. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Vangelis's solo albums continued to be released, but the musician did not focus on "electronic" and soundtracks, but discovered new genres for himself. For example, together with the Englishman Wayne Eagling, he worked on the production of ballets, and later wrote the repertoire for the opera diva Montserrat Caballe.

In 2001, Vangelis, with the support of NASA and the Greek Ministry of Culture, organized a concert in the Athenian temple of Zeus, where he presented his choral symphony "Mythodea". Three years later, the musician returned to the cinema and recorded the soundtrack for Oliver Stone's film "Alexander".

Vangelis returned after 20 years of emigration to Greece. He was commissioned to create music for the most significant celebrations, such as the opening of the Olympic Games in Athens. The full name of this artist is Evangelos Odysseus Papatanassiou, however in the world of music he is known simply as Vangelis. Born on March 29, 1943, Vangelis began composing his own compositions from the age of four and, having given up piano lessons, mastered the instrument on his own.
