The rite of prayerful consolation of relatives

The text of the rite "The rite of prayer for consolation of relatives, your belly willfully died" was approved by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on July 27, 2011 (journal No. 87)

Church canons prohibit "offering and prayer" for suicides (Timothy, 14), as deliberately cut themselves off from communion with God. The said rule of Saint Timothy of Alexandria was directed against the fallen members of the Church. This anxiety prompted her to confess often, and with the beginning of fasting it began to seem to her that she was not completing something. Excitement, fussiness appeared, sleep was disturbed. On the fourth of December, she received communion, and the fear entered into her that she did not confess one sin and now eternal destruction awaits her soul. The next day there was some enlightenment in her mind, and we agreed to go to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra to Fr. Herman, but when the moment of departure came, a whole cascade of excuses followed. How are mental illnesses classified? Fundamentally, psychiatry distinguishes two levels of pathological changes. The first level (or group) includes psychotic states. This is a wide group of diseases that have a non-psychogenic (non-psychological) origin and are associated with a number of genetic, metabolic and other disorders. Among the main diseases of this group are schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, epileptic and senile psychoses. Diseases can be continuous or paroxysmal, sluggish or bright, severe or moderately severe. Typical symptoms of psychosis: delirium, hallucinations, behavioral disturbances (more often in schizophrenia); disorders of the emotional sphere in the form of mania or depression (with manic-depressive psychosis), etc. Over time, the entire mental "appearance" of a person can change. Another group of pathological diseases includes a variety of neurotic, neurosis-like disorders. Distinctive feature of these diseases is the connection of their occurrence with stress, traumatic circumstances, defects in upbringing, social conditions. Unlike psychosis, in the case of non-psychotic disorders that make up the so-called "minor" psychiatry, patients treat their mental state critically, trying to fight the illness that has befallen them. Mental illness proceeds in many respects differently from somatic (bodily) pathology and their connection with the spiritual sphere is obvious. Let us dwell on this provision in more detail. One of the features of mental illness is, as it were, the absence of a visible damaging factor. How many significant anatomical changes are absent in the brain in schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis. Neuroses also do not manifest themselves as visible defects on the part of the central nervous system. In epileptic and senile psychosis, painful changes in the brain are more likely to precede the clinical picture of mental disorders than they are generated by them. Affinity of the spiritual realm and mental illness noted for a long time. Today, few of the historians of medicine recall that the first stage in the development of psychiatry is called monastic. From all over Russia, the mentally ill and possessed were brought to monasteries. As time went on, a decade followed a decade, and by the 30s and 40s, among psychiatrists and scientists of other specialties (with rare exceptions), an obedient attitude toward godlessness and atheism developed. The spiritual understanding of every disease was finally overthrown.

What lies behind the symptoms of the disease?

When you start thinking about some of the psychopathological manifestations observed in patients, you involuntarily think about the spiritual essence of their occurrence. I will give a description of individual symptoms and syndromes used in practice to describe the state of mind of patients.

Delirium of obsession- an animal, insect, mythological or living creature invented by the patient himself has moved into the patient, which constantly (less often - periodically) resides in the body and makes him perform movements, actions, contrary to the wishes of the patient, guides his thoughts and feelings.

Automatisms- the emergence of feelings, movements, thoughts, images, ideas and other things apart from the will and desire of the patient.

Persecutory delirium- a group of delusional ideas characterized by the patient's delusional conviction of outside influence and with the aim of causing him moral or physical harm.

Brad Kotara- ... accompanied by confidence in the forthcoming torment, torture, long and painfully cruel, to which both the patient himself and his family and friends will be subjected.

Coprolalia- systematic clogging of the speech of the mentally ill with abusive, obscene words, cynical expressions.

Suicidomania- a constant unrelenting desire to commit suicide at all costs.

Some pathological conditions accepted in psychiatry, such as incest (sexual relations between relatives), homosexuality, are unambiguously considered by the Holy Church as the most serious sins. Alcoholism, heavy smoking, drug use are also sins.

Irritability, intolerance, despondency belong not only to psychopathology, but, perhaps, first of all, to asceticism. This list goes on and on.

There are more "mysteries" in psychiatry than in any other clinical discipline. Modern psychiatry has established itself on materialistic positions and, accordingly, does not recognize the existence of demons. And hence it cannot explain the origin of many mental disorders. This is especially true for the states of demonic content.

It should also be said that psychiatry is closely related to psychology. The latter largely shapes the thinking of a psychiatrist, as it gives an idea of the mental processes of a healthy person. For nearly eight decades, psychological science has tried to exist without God. I remember the lectures on psychology that I happened to hear over the years of study, and I sigh sadly. "There was no forest behind the trees" - that is how you can describe them. And if otherwise, then the soul of a person did not peep behind the tricky terms. Until I began to get acquainted with the works of the Holy Fathers, and I myself was, as it were, in a fog. God make us wise!

Mental illness - the cross laid by the Lord

What causes mental disorders and diseases? Let's try to consider this issue. There are several points of view. One of the reasons is human nature.

For three years the Monk Anthony of Pechersky took care of a monk with catatonia (one of the forms of psychosis), considering his condition as a disease, and not as a result of the influence of an evil spirit (cited example by Prof. TI Yudin).

The Monk John Climacus gives certain signs, according to which he advises to distinguish mood disorders of spiritual origin that arise against the will of the monks, from the same ones that are not inferior to prayer and strength. sign of the cross, moods, the development of which depends, as he writes, "on nature" (quoted from Prof. DE Melikhov).

In the book Orthodox Pastoral Ministry, speaking about psychiatry, Archimandrite Cyprian (Kern) points out that there are states of the soul that are difficult to define in terms of moral theology and which are not included in the concepts of good and evil. These states, according to the author, do not belong to the ascetic area, but to the psychopathological, and develop from human nature.

Summing up some of the above, it can be assumed that mental illnesses can be comparable in this plane of comparison with bodily illnesses, and that both, by the permission of God, are sent to man in order to advance in the matter of salvation. In this case, mental illness is the cross laid by the Lord.

Medical scientific evidence also suggests that mental disorders arise at a biological level. This position is confirmed by such circumstances as, for example, the occurrence of psychopathological symptoms against the background of somatic or neurological pathology, the appearance of mental disorders under the influence of various harmful factors (poisoning with neurotropic poisons, microwave field, loud noise, work in darkness, etc.). Confirms the advanced position and the fact that psychopathological manifestations are often and successfully cured with medications. It is worth mentioning that genetic studies have been carried out for predisposition to mental illness and certain patterns have been identified.

It is clear that human flesh cannot become sick in isolation from the rest of his nature. Any disease, whether it be psychopathology, a disease of the stomach, bones or eyes, has a spiritual nature, for all diseases of mankind are a consequence of the Fall. That is, when we say that this or another disease is natural, it means that psychopathological or somatic symptoms appear more clearly and visibly in its nature. In this regard, I would like to give an example. It is known that schizophrenia is characterized by a kind of splitting of mental activity. But people who consider themselves healthy also have this duality. This "duality" of fallen man was described by ap. Pavel: “I don’t understand what I’m doing, because I don’t do what I want, but what I hate, I do. If I do what I do not want, then I agree with the law that it is good, and therefore it is no longer I who do that, according to the sin that dwells in me. For I know that the good does not live in me, that is, in my flesh; because the desire for good is in me, but I do not find it to do it. The good that I want I don’t do, but the evil I don’t want I do. But if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do that, but sin that dwells in me "(Rom. 7: 15-20).

Mental disorders as a kind of demonic content

Mental disorders can also appear as a result of the action of evil spirits on a person. In Holy Scripture, evil spirits are depicted as entering and leaving people (Matthew 4:24; Mark 1:23; Luke 4:35, etc.). Especially remarkable is the healing of the Gadarene demoniac by the Lord. This unfortunate man dragged out his life not in human dwellings, but in coffin caves; beat against a stone with foam on his lips, emitted screams. They tried to shackle him, but he, like ropes, tore the shackles. What is this disease?

Unbelievers will say: epilepsy, nervous breakdown. It is very likely that the basis of demonic possession is mental and physical disorder, which serves as a convenient breeding ground for the devil. But it cannot be said about the demoniac Gadarene that he was only nervous; This is evident from the following: the demons driven out of the unfortunate person asked Christ for permission to enter the herd of pigs. The Savior permitted, and the flock rushed from the steepness into the sea (Matt. 8: 28-32). Who drowned the pigs? Not a demoniac who sat at the feet of the Lord, but a legion of demons expelled from him (quoted from the book "The Christian Doctrine of Evil Spirits").

As a result of being possessed by an evil spirit, the soul becomes unnatural, it languishes and suffers. In Holy Scripture, demoniacs are directly and clearly distinguished from people possessed by mental and physical illnesses. The latter, as indicated, develop from a disorder mental strength, imagination, reason, etc. (Bible Encyclopedia).

Desolation will not be forgotten by anyone who has seen its manifestations at least once. I first saw such a person in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It was a middle-aged woman. Every time the priest performed the censing of the church and approached the place where she stood, wild, inarticulate screams burst out of her and, as if in insensibility, the woman fell on her back. Then she got up, quietly, with tears in her eyes, apologized to the worshipers ...

Later, I came across similar cases more than once. Let me give you one more example. A believer, an Orthodox woman, came to the reception in the direction of the rector of the church, of which she was a parishioner. It turned out that she had been on a mental disability for some time. Quiet, in a headscarf, under glasses, beautiful gray-blue eyes. She told me how she was feeling. As a psychiatrist, it was not difficult for me to see mental disorders. But here's what happened next. All of a sudden, she somehow changed, started to move, and loudly, in a very disgusting, hoarse voice, swore obscenely and said, as it were, a few phrases to herself. Both me and her companion, who was also in the office, became completely clear that the demon was speaking in her.

In 1994, a book by Fr. Vladimir Emelechev's "Possessed. The Expulsion of Evil Spirits", in which the priest collected a large number of examples from his own pastoral experience and stories from other people, clergy and laity. The book is very instructive.

Perhaps, two circumstances distinguish a demon-possessed person from a genuinic (primary) psychotic. First, evil spirits know God, tremble before the power of the Cross of Christ, prayer, Epiphany water, St. Christ's Mysteries. Second, mental (mainly behavioral) disorders in demonic people are violent. For the soul of a person is disgusted with what the evil one forces to do. A distinctive feature is also a critical attitude towards oneself, which significantly distinguishes the possessed person from the mentally ill. Archbishop John (Shakhovskoy) in his book "The Philosophy of Orthodox Pastorship" gives the following distinctions between the described states. Possession can, in the opinion of the lord, be called such states when a person loses all self-consciousness. The soul is under the strongest demonic influence. Obsession is the partial captivity of the soul by an evil force. In ordinary reality, we become obsessed when we are enslaved to our passions and vices.

Everything is the will of God. For others, the Lord allows them to fall into the weakness of possession, because he knows that a person uses his mind and will for his own sake; others, perhaps, protects them from grave sins. We read in the Epistle to the Corinthians in St. Paul: Devoted to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that the spirit might be saved on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 5: 5). In addition to the mystical aspect of paramount importance, pastoral counseling (and in some cases the activity of an Orthodox psychiatrist) should also extend to the personality of the sufferer, his psychology. Vladyka John writes about this: “The shepherd pours into the afflicted-obsessed one the strength to fight demonic spirits, disobeying their suggestions, despising them, holy evangelical hatred for them and for sin, through which demons usually keep people in subjection to themselves. believe demonic suggestions and slanders both on God and on people, do not focus on those evil and dark thoughts that the demons instill, put into the heart and mind. Rejected thoughts and feelings will remain “external” for a person, remain in the area of the “heel” - under man.Accepted and approved demonic suggestions are made by the seeds of evil in the soul of man and bind him organically to the power of the evil one.

“One of the teachers of the Church of the second century, Tertullian, said surprisingly true and deep words:“ The human soul is by nature Christian. ”It longs for spiritual food, purity and holiness, it longs for Christ. This is also an obsession with demons, to a small, weak degree, but still an obsession, one of the forms of demoniacal possession.

Why, why do people become possessed by demoniacs?

A person lives in a social environment. His thoughts, desires, deeds, world outlook are determined to a great extent by the influence of the environment that surrounds him. You know that if a healthy person stays near a consumptive patient for a long time and breathes the same air, then he becomes infected. We also get infected from patients with the flu.

This also happens in spiritual life. If a person lives in an atmosphere of many heavenly spirits of evil, among temptations, among grievous examples of wickedness, depravity, in an atmosphere of unbridled human passions, if he lives in an atmosphere of stupidity and vulgarity, then this atmosphere cannot but infect his soul. Day after day he breathes in this poisonous air, which is teeming with the spirits of evil in the heavens. And the unfortunate soul becomes infected, and itself becomes a dwelling place for demons.

What should we do? Where can we go from this heavy, deadly atmosphere? Where is our refuge? Where is our protection from demons, the spirits of evil in high places? Always look for answers to all difficult questions in the Scriptures.

Look at Psalm 61 and there you will find the answer: only in God does my soul rest; from Him my salvation. He alone is my rock, my salvation, my refuge. This is where our refuge is, this is where the antidote is against the poison that we perceive from the environment around us.

Diseases of the Soul - A Secret

Analyzing the causes of mental illness, you understand that all their diversity is difficult to fit into one scheme. Anyone who has been to a psychiatric hospital, seen, heard or communicated with mentally ill people can confirm that the "spirit" of this institution is very heavy. I mean in this case not so much the impression of what he saw, as an inner heart feeling. We talked about the fact that in the case of a true (genuinic) mental pathology, the symptomatology develops from nature, and not in view of the enemy's temptation. But the "atmosphere" in psychiatric clinics significantly differs from that which happens, for example, in a somatic hospital. What's the matter here? Perhaps there are sometimes both obsession and carnal affliction at the same time? Most likely so.

Archbishop Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) said on this occasion: "The causes of many mental illnesses are unknown to the most learned psychiatrists. We also do not know the reasons for the violent insanity. But it seems to me beyond doubt that among the violently insane there is a certain percentage of those who are truly possessed."

Archbishop Innocent of Kherson writes that against the background of mental illness, the thinnest nervous tissue is destroyed, and voids are formed, through which the soul becomes most vulnerable to devilish influences. Thus, the disease arising from nature, as it were, bares the soul. Isn't that why certain psychopathological manifestations so clearly resemble the behavior of the possessed (remember the psychopathological formations listed above)?

In most cases of mental illness, a spiritual "diagnosis" is appropriate. The borders here are very transparent. And further. More than once I had to see mentally ill people with a long history of illness, who, as they became churches, by the grace of God, went through various intractable and incurable manifestations of the disease. Prayer, fasting, St. The sacraments radically changed their mental state. Persistent delusional ideas, hallucinations disappeared, meaningfulness appeared in the eyes, well-being improved significantly. Instead of a "madman's mask", the seal of spirituality was displayed on the face.

Professor DE Melikhov in his work "Psychiatry and the Problems of Spiritual Life" wrote: "Under the influence of sin, a living human soul, which has not lost conscience, experiences a sense of guilt, sorrow, torment and the need to be freed from sin. A believer goes to church for help. , refers to a spiritually experienced person. He experiences spiritual pain and suffering, and sometimes bears the physical consequences of sin. Here is another very important spiritual observation: "The enemy fell with pride." “Pride is the beginning of sin; it contains all kinds of evil: vanity, popularity, lust for power, coldness, cruelty, indifference to the sufferings of one's neighbor; dreaminess of the mind, heightened action of the imagination, demonic expression of the eyes, demonic character of the whole appearance; gloom, longing, despair, hatred; envy, humiliation, many have a breakdown in carnal lust; an agonizing inner anxiety, disobedience, fear of death, or vice versa - a search to end life, and, finally, which is often, complete madness. I will cite as an example a letter, which, in my opinion, quite clearly illustrates the complex interweaving of the spiritual and mental, states of obsession and mental disorders. She had to resort to psychiatric help, and she ended up in a psychiatric hospital. After the shock therapy, she quickly recovered, but for a month, nevertheless, was in the hospital.
It should also be noted that before that she was engaged in the practice of the Jesus Prayer without proper guidance and during the entire period of illness for several days almost continuously repeated this prayer. In addition, everything that happened against the background of mental fatigue associated at that time with difficult translations from a foreign language and a nervous shock after the loss of teeth. At the hospital she was diagnosed with vegetative-vascular dystonia.
After the hospital, everything was calm until the Nativity Fast, although she was worried about what had happened. This anxiety prompted her to confess often, and with the beginning of fasting it began to seem to her that she was not completing something. Excitement, fussiness appeared, sleep was disturbed. On the fourth of December, she received communion, and the fear entered into her that she did not confess one sin and now eternal destruction awaits her soul. The next day there was some enlightenment in her mind, and we agreed to go to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra to Fr. Herman, but when the moment of departure came, a whole cascade of excuses followed.
